Permit Information and Forms

Building Permits and Inspections

All construction permits for permanent structures and/or improvements including but not limited to additions, detached garages, driveways, sheds, fences, decks, patios, gazebos, porches, pergolas, outdoor fireplaces, swimming pools, sport courts and/or freestanding signs will require the property corner pins of the subject property to be located and clearly staked prior to the pre-pour inspection. It is the responsibility of the property owner to locate and stake the property corner pins.

If the property owner is unable to locate the property corner pins, then it is their responsibility to hire a licensed surveyor to do so. If the property corner pins are not located and clearly staked at the time of the inspection, the inspection will not be conducted and a reinspection fee of $50.00 may apply.

Work shall not commence until this requirement has been met and the pre-pour inspection has been approved. In the event of any discrepancy, the property owner may be required to hire a licensed surveyor to verify the location of the property corners. The Village of Barrington IL does not employ a licensed surveyor and therefore, under state law, cannot locate property corners. We recomment that all property owners utilize a professional land surveyor to verify the location of their property lines.

Permit Process

Step 1- Do I Need A Permit?

All work involving structural, electrical and/or plumbing alterations, additions or any work that effects the weather-tight envelope of the building requires a building permit.

A permit is also required for all exterior work including but not limited to new/replacement roofs, siding and/or windows, new/replacement driveways, fences, decks, patios, terraces, porches, walkways, trellises, arbors, outdoor fire pits or fireplaces, playground equipment, dog runs, sheds, detached garages, screened porches, swimming pools, sport courts, drainage improvements including burying downspouts.

Step 2 - Prepare Documents

In general, a Construction Permit Application and 2 sets of plans are required for all permits. For specifics, see the Construction Permit Submittal Guidelines.

In addition, all contractors and subcontractors must complete a Contractor’s Registration before a permit will be issued.

Providing the correct submittal documents and completing the Contractor’s Registration will expedite the permit review process.

All new businesses also need to fill-out a Business Registration/Zoning Certificate before a permit will be issued.

Step 3 - Submit

Building permits may be submitted in person Monday thru Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm.

Permits may also be submitted via mail, however verify your submittal is complete before submitting via mail.

Incomplete submittals will not be processed until all necessary documentation is received. No permit fees are due at the time of submittal.

Step 4 - Permit Review and Appoval

The Village does not issue any over the counter building permits.

Your permit will be reviewed in the order in which it was received.

Step 5 - Pickup and Payment

Upon approval of your permit, our front desk staff will contact you. Payment is due at the time of permit pick-up.

No permits will be issued until all contractors and subcontractors have completed a Contractor’s Registration.
