Permit Overview

The City's Community and Economic Development Department (CED) is here to help with your questions Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Permits are required for a number of different projects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our residents. (See our General Permit Information)

Activities that Require Building Permits

Following is a list of projects that require a City of Des Plaines Building Permit. This list is not all-inclusive:

  • Fences, decks and stairs, concrete, asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops, and stairs
  • Demolitions, doors (Exterior), extensive interior remodeling work
  • Fire sprinklers and mechanical systems (heating and air conditioning)
  • Grading changes, retention walls, or other landscaping involving topographical changes
  • New electric service or additional devices requiring new lines, new structures and any structural changes, plumbing (water heaters, etc.)
  • Roofing, re-roofing, or tear-off, sewer repairs or clean-outs, sheds, shoring and foundation repairs, siding, signs, banners, tents, swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs, and window

The City of Des Plaines requires that specific contractors working in the community carry the appropriate license and permit bond for the project. Our knowledgeable staff works with contractors on a daily basis to ensure the finished product complies with the City's building standards.
